Alpacas

Pat and I are the proud owners of Blacklands Alpacas, a business which we have built up over the past 7 years or so.  We specialise in coloured alpacas (particularly blacks, browns and – more recently – greys).  We sell alpacas as breeding stock, pets, lawn mowers and/or flock guardians – and we have our own black stud males … as well as a young grey male who is “working” – lucky fella – for the first time this year.

The purpose of breeding an alpaca is to harvest its beautiful soft fleece and turn it into luxurious yarn, which we then use to produce items such as scarves, hats and gloves.  Pat does some hand spinning, but not enough to keep up with the volume of fleece which we gather each year – about 120 Kg this year – so the bulk of it is sent away to small mills for conversion into yarn.
